Ngaroimata Cavill
Kuia Rangatira ō Ngai Tukairangi
Hikitapua Ngata
Bachelors in Engineering (Hons)
This year, Hikitapua Ngata was the proud recipient of the Ngaroimata Cavill Tertiary Excellence Award. This scholarship offered a helping hand in the form of financial aid, which contributed to his journey towards completing an Honours degree in Engineering at the University of Waikato.
The Ngaroimata Cavill Excellence Award recognises individuals who are studying in a field that deserves special recognition, and also acknowledges the ability for people to demonstrate excellence within their chosen field of knowledge. This award was created in the memory of Kuia Ngaroimata Cavill, a woman whose nature so elegantly expressed the importance of whanaungatanga and tikanga Māori within our community and hapū.
Ngaroimata was affluently knowledgeable in the history of our Iwi, our hapū, our surroundings, and our traditions as indigenous peoples. These aspects have allowed for her memory to live on, having been expressed in the forms of academic papers, waiata and books such as the Waitangi Tribunal evidence for Ngai Tukairangi Hapu, and Taku Tau Kahurangi: He kohinga waiata tawhito mō Ngāi Te Rangi, Tauranga Moana.
In her lifetime, she impacted our whanau, communities, hapū and Iwi through her leadership, her values, and her ability to share these. In a compelling way, she also ensured that our Marae; Whareroa, Hungahungatoroa, Waikari and Maungatapu were emanating and embodying mana in every way possible. In her actions, she sets
a high expectation for future emerging community and hapū leaders. In that sense, we hope that with our assistance, provided we have Kuia Rangatira such as Ngaroimata to look up to, that Hikitapua, along with many others, are one day able to give back to our community as selflessly as she did.
Hikitapua Ngata descends from a long line of academics, beginning as far back as his Great Great Grandfather -‐ Sir Āpirana Ngata. He is the grandson of Ngai Tukairangi trust shareholder Hikareia Ellis, and the son to Riri Ellis. Riri is an individual whose efforts as an active community member go far beyond just the borders of our Matapihi village. These efforts have no doubt influenced his drive to do well.
Hikitapua has demonstrated excellence both academically and creatively, evident through his university achievements, and the launch of his first business – an independently run clothing brand. These attributes of his have so easily led to various accolades within these fields. This was exemplified recently when he was granted the award for the overall Rangatahi of the year at the 2015 Tauranga Moana Rangatahi Awards. His current abilities along with his insightful demeanour provide a solid foundation for who he is, and what he has managed to achieve in his short life.
Ngai Tukairangi is proud to award Hikitapua with the Ngaroimata Cavill Excellence award, as it not only represents a token of support towards building a Māori professional, but it also symbolises an investment into his future as a role model for our Māori youth to come.

Completing PhD in Māori Leadership
In 2014, Ngai Tukairangi Trust awarded Adrianne Taungapeau with the Toa Haere Faulkner Excellence Award. It was given to her as a token of support to assist her in her efforts towards completing her PhD in Māori Leadership.
Ngai Tukairangi Trust awards these excellence scholarships to individuals who show erudition within their chosen fields of education. In saying that, these recipients must have also shown evidence of community involvement, through ways of whanaungatanga, and must protrude values that will one day benefit the hapū and its people. Despite Adrianne’s absence from our Ngai Tukairangi local community, it was made obvious that her efforts within her own were suited to what was required of a scholarship applicant.
This particular scholarship was created in the memory of Toa Haere Faulkner. As an individual, he showed a strong sense of righteousness, accompanied by a yearn for self-‐determination. These personal attributes of his, in addition to the manaakitanga he felt for his people, land and community, led him on to pursuing politics. In his lifetime, he frequently involved himself in Waitangi Tribunal Claims, he sought justice in as many places that he could, and he stood up for the rights of his own. Toa will be remembered for his work to do with Matapihi land block rates, his ability to be both socially and politically
involved in his community, and most importantly, for his argumentative yet generous demeanour.
Adrianne Taungapeau is the grand-‐daughter of Rongopai Hemi Haika, a previous shareholder who passed them on to this daughter, Adrianne’s mother. Their lineage and association with Ngai Tukairangi Hapū is an intriguing story, which eventually lead her ancestors to reside in Waikari.
Like Toa, Adrianne was raised in small rural communities. Growing up, she was bought up in between the small township communities of Whangaruru in Te Tai Tokerau, and Whangarei. Here she was raised by her parents, two very important individuals in her life that were able to install the importance of education within their growing offspring. To this day, Adrianne is a living example of that, evident in her studies towards attaining her PhD in Māori Leadership. Adrianne’s parents were heavily involved within these communities, essentially helping to create environments that stressed whanaungatanga and manaakitanga. There is no doubt that Adrianne herself adopted these values during her upbringing.
Adrianne and Toa are likened. Both are individuals who rely on whanaungatanga as a base for a great communal set up, and also share an interest in Māori development through all aspects of life.
Adrianne is currently writing her thesis on Māori Leadership within a business context, however has a strong focus on the leadership of Māori women within the tertiary education sector. With this scholarship, we hope that Adrianne is able to impose the values she has learnt throughout her life, and the lessons learnt from her time studying/participating in Māori development, on and with our community in the days to come.

Hinerau was a pillar of strength in her own right and served as an inspiration for many young Maori women in Matapihi and beyond.
Kia Maia Ellis is a mokopuna of Steve Ellis and Riri Te Whara Te Kani with Riri in particular being a well renowned kuia instrumental in establishing Hungahungatoroa Marae. Meremaihi Ngatai-Aloua
Te Panekiretanga o te Reo Maori
For only the second time since its inception in 2005, the Ngai Tukairangi Trust awarded Meremaihi Aloua with an excellence award. The Ngai Tukairangi Ahu Whenua Trust, which is located in Matapihi, Mount Maunganui and associated with the Ngai Tukairangi
hapu of Ngai Te Rangi has been providing tertiary scholarships for more than a decade. But, in 2004 the trustees decided that a special award should be created to provide more financial assistance to students and to utilise the award as a way to recognise our esteemed leaders who passed. In 2003, Wiparera Te Kani, one of the founding trustees passed away and in 2004, the first award was provided in his honour. Marama Lambert, a practicing optometrist, wanted to undertake pharmacology training to prescribe medicine to her clients. An intensive one year programme was required and the Trust backed her in her quest.
The next award was dedicated to another esteemed leader of our community, Hauoterangi Dickson, father of Brian Dickson, Chief Executive of the Ngai Te Rangi Runanga and Ngareta Timutimu, a past senior lecturer at Awanuiarangi. However, for the last three years, the trustees have been wishing to give out the award but many of the applicants were not deemed excellent. This year was different, and at the annual general meeting of owners, the trustees were proud to award the scholarship to Meremaihi Aloua to support her attendance at Te Panekiretanga o te Reo, in Napier.
Meremaihi is a mokopuna to Kihi and Maria Ngatai both well known kaumatua of Ngai Te Rangi and Ngati Ranginui. Her mother – Puharangi Ngatai – recently passed away would have been very proud of her daughter.
Meremaihi has a real passion for Te Reo and this coupled with her love of whanau and community means there is a great likelihood our support will lead to inspiration, mentorship and contribution back here to the people of Ngai Tukairangi. Already she stepped up to the mark, by co-tutoring the local Matapihi kapa haka group in the Tauranga Moana festival held over labour weekend.
Meremaihi has indicated that the grant will help her with transport and attendance costs to enable her to complete the course and gain the most from the learnings she will receive.
We look forward to hearing from Meremaihi as she progresses, seeing her utilise this opportunity to better the people of Ngai Tukairangi and involving her in the future journey of the Ngai Tukairangi Trust. Congratulations Meremaihi and we look forward to sharing your success.
Meremaihi’s award is dedicated to remembering Hauoterangi Rikihana. He was a generous man who gave of his time unreservedly for matters related to whanau, hapu and Iwi. Always seen supporting the paepae tapu at Whareroa, Waikari and Hungahungatoroa, you could see why the alignment of Meremaihi with our koro as the exemplar of community heart in action is obvious. A fluent native speaker of Te Reo himself, Hauoterangi is a testiment to the type of man everyone aspires to be; a humble, humorous and dedicated whanau, hapu and marae gentlemen.
Marama Lambert
Optometrist
It’s been some time since the Trust awarded Marama with its first tertiary excellence award. We wanted to see how she is going and found a nice little write up about her progress on the Careers Services website.
Marama Lambert is the daughter of Mere Lambert (Te Kani) and Len Lambert and mokopuna of Turirangi and Hinerau Te Kani. She is one of three children who have all worked hard in their chosen careers and when she was successful as the excellence recipient, it was because she was pursuing a qualification that set her apart from others. That qualification was a post-graduate diploma in optometrists that enabled her to prescribe medicine to her clients. At the time that Marama was awarded this tohu, she was the only Maori in the country pursuing this additional qualification. She may well probably be the only Maori in the country with that qualification as well. The award is for a sum of $5000.00.
The following excerpt from the Careers Services korero.
Marama Lambert says the best thing about being an optometrist is having a chance to make a difference. “It is the kind of job where you actually make an impact. If someone can walk out of here with the right glasses and say „Wow, this is so amazing’, you never get sick of it.”
For Marama, every customer presents a new challenge. “Every eye test is like detective work. If a person can’t see you have to ask why. Although with a lot of people you could correct the problem with glasses, there are others who you need to test to make sure that their eyes are healthy. There are sneaky things that you miss if you‟re not careful, like glaucoma. If you don‟t look for the signs, like pressure inside the eye, you could actually misdiagnose glaucoma.”
As an optometrist, you need technical knowledge to get the right results, but Marama says you also need great people skills to communicate those results. “You‟ve got to be a people person to do this job. I mean, every day that‟s all you ever do. Sure, you test their eyes and there is the technical aspect to it, but if you get all the right results and you don‟t portray those to the person and make them understand what they need, then they‟re going to walk out of here none the wiser.”
As for the future, Marama would like to build up her skills in the speciality areas of optometry. At the moment she is taking a course that will allow her to move towards therapeutics, so that she can write prescriptions for eye-related problems, not just glasses and contact lenses. “This course has a mainly practical approach where I‟ll observe an eye surgeon. Then I have an oral examination and after that I can prescribe! It‟s very exciting.”
Marama’s career progress since 2005 Completed a postgraduate diploma in ocular therapeutics in 2006, after 18 months of part-time study and full-time employment. Is now qualified to prescribe eye medications such as antibiotics, antivirals, and anti-inflammatories. Marama’s increased knowledge means she feels more confident making referrals to ophthalmologists (eye specialists) for more complex eye problems. Hopes to increase her knowledge in areas of interest, including behavioural optometry and complex contact lens fittings.Enjoys working in a profession that will continue to evolve as more drugs become available, and looks forward to people in her profession developing a closer tie with eye specialists.
Marama says, “the best thing is being able to treat red-eye problems, a condition I see regularly in the practice. This can involve removing foreign objects from the eye, or treating more serious cases like inflammation inside the eye and corneal ulcers.”
Marama’s award was dedicated to remembering Wiparera Te Kani. He was a founding trustee of our Trust, and also a first cousin to Marama’s grandfather, Turirangi Te Kani. Wiparera gave endlessly of his time to our community, our marae and to the hahi Ratana. Wiparera Te Kani passed away in 2003, and this award helped acknowledge the work that he did as a hapu and tribal leader. As well as receiving an award for pursuing a pathway in education that is a cut above others, the recipient is reminded to reflect upon the person and their traits in remembering what types of leaders we are hoping to develop in the future through our scholarship programme. Wiparera was survived by his wife Carol and his two adult sons, Neil and Louis.
